Before suffering a week-long coma in 2008, Dr. Eben Alexander (an academic neurosurgeon who has taught at Harvard Medical School) always believed that “there were good scientific explanations for the heavenly out-of-body journeys described by those who narrowly escaped death” (Newsweek). However, after miraculously awaking from his coma, Alexander quickly changed his tune:
“There is no scientific explanation for the fact that while my body lay in coma, my mind—my conscious, inner self—was alive and well. While the neurons of my cortex were stunned to complete inactivity by the bacteria that had attacked them, my brain-free consciousness journeyed to another, larger dimension of the universe: a dimension I’d never dreamed existed and which the old, pre-coma me would have been more than happy to explain was a simple impossibility” (Newsweek).
Despite the fact that his entire cortex (the part of the brain that controls thought and emotion) had completely stopped working during the coma, Alexander awoke to describe a vivid trip to heaven, where “shimmering beings arced across the sky” and “big, puffy, pink-white” clouds filled the air. During this experience, Alexander says he was accompanied by a female companion, who imparted three distinct messages:
“You are loved and cherished, dearly, forever.”
“You have nothing to fear.”
“There is nothing you can do wrong.”
While many patients have suffered near-death experiences and described glimpses of an after-life, Alexander’s experience is significant in that it is possibly the first “glimpse” that has ever occurred when a patient’s cortex was completely incapacitated and while their body was under intense medical supervision.
“Dr. Eben Alexander’s near-death experience is the most astounding I have heard in more than four decades of studying this phenomenon… one of the crown jewels of all near-death experiences… Dr. Alexander is living proof of an afterlife.” – Raymond Moody, MD, PhD (Life Beyond Death)
Alexander’s book, Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon’s Journey into the Afterlife, is set for release October 23. Until then, you can preview excerpts in Newsweek and learn more on Alexander’s site, “Life Beyond Death.”
